BEAL ATHA GABHANN   Silvermines GAA Club

Hurling – an Ancient Irish Sport was played in the time of Chuculainn and it was played in the Silvermines long before the GAA was founded in 1884.  Brother O’Caithnior wrote in his book “Sceal na hlomance” that Silvermines & Nenagh played a game of Hurling in 1843.

When the GAA was founded in 1884 Silvermines were one of the first Clubs organised and affiliated between the end of 1884 and the start of 1885.

In March 1885 the first game in Tipperary under the New Rules of the Association was played between Silvermines & Nenagh Mitchells.  Silvermines won this game.  Hurling has continued since in the Silvermines when there were different teams in the Parish at different times, In 1926, 1927 1928 Dolla had its own team and they won the North Tipp Intermediate .In 1939 Ballinaclough had their own team and they won the North Tipp Intermediate championship that year. However after this the Parish formed one team and it has remained that way since and the Club have won several titles since.  Our Juvenile Club was formed in 1970.  We have also had many outstanding players in our Club and many have played at all levels for Tipperary.  One of the Clubs’s most noted players would be Noel Sheehy. Noel won All Ireland Honours with Tipperary at Minor, U21 and Senior Level along with received 2 All-Stars. When Tipperary last won the All Ireland Intermediate Championship Declan Corcoran was Captain.  Declan’s cousin Jason Forde is the current Captain of Tipperary Minor Team.  Jason was a member of the U16 Tipperary Team that won the U16 Tipperary Supporters Tournament in 2009.
